Love is non-negotiable

For our first meeting, we had an interesting activity about listing all the social media channels we come across in a day. It was funny because for the first five minutes I was coming up blank.

Anyway, I was able to list some names before the time was up. My groupmates and I were amused when we compared our lists with each other. Most of us exclaimed about the ads or brands that seemed so obvious—and too recurrent—that we did not remember. Wynne said that it might be because we were all too bombarded with so many ads that we’ve become numb to it. I completely agree.

It would be a miracle for anyone to remember any ad at all. Commercial breaks are too long, and most ads are fighting to be in-your-face (I mean, the latest Pond’s commercial had great cinematography and pretty fanfare but I thought it was just overkill).

One TV ad I do like is BayanTel’s latest commercial about the lola who was complaining to her grandchild over the Internet. It was simple and straightforward, but when the lola techie got to the part about Super Poke and Facebook and all of those very now web lingo and applications, I just thought it was really, really amusing—and more importantly, very memorable. The message was clear, showing us that hooking up with the Internet can bridge the gap between people, whether they’re a thousand miles away, or just like in the lola’s case—young and old. I love Lola Techie!

On a different note, in class we also talked about our internship experiences. It was good to hear that we all enjoyed our 200 (or more) hours in the workplace. Personally, the best thing I learned from it was making me tougher to stomach criticism and accepting responsibility gracefully. The workplace effectively dismantled my ego, letting me know I have a lot to learn about work—and life, in general. Then again, the really lasting lessons for me were: (1) to always strive to learn as much as I could, and (2) to pursue something that really drives me.

I think that in order to show passion and zest for my work, I need to find something that I love first and foremost. Of course, I’ve known that since Day One, but it is only during internship that I learned the love part is non-negotiable. But that is a story for another day.

  1. I love the BayanTel commercial too. I’ve seen it ample times yet I’m still somehow amused everytime it’s aired.

I remember my receiving a text from my lola saying that she already knows how to text. Haha. I almost cried laughing.

But more than the fact that I find both LOLA instances funny, I’m also amazed how old people like them, instead of resisting change, chose to adapt the change.

Traditional organizations should take these LOLAs as role models. HAHA

  2. Trust events to teach us how to “accept responsibility gracefully” . . . no matter what kind of “responsibility” that is. *sigh* Glad you’ve been “reawakened”–I’ve yet to give a take on mine. :/

Love is non-negotiable–I shall keep that BananaQuote in mind.

P.S. I didn’t know BayanTel had such ad. It sounds hilarious from your post. I really need to watch more television! Or not. :P

    • Aww i know that your uh, extensive experience in and out of the office (yeeees) will make you realize something soon. Hee!

There’s always YouTube if you don’t want to watch TV. :)

And yes, love is non-negotiable Kath, no matter how dire the circumstances are. :)

  3. It’s proven that one thing that attracts us to some ads is HUMOR!I love “lola techie” too! The BayanTel ad extends their target audience and it certainly succeeded in capturing our attention. :)

I agree that the internship experience helped us in terms of experience, responsibility and attitude. It is always nice to know that what you are required to do really helped you. :)

    • i love the part when she said something like “Nag Super Poke ako sa’yo, hindi ka naman nag Poke-back!” :) ) It was so darn effective.

Internship really does put things into perspective yes? Makes you think what you really want to do. I hope all of us seniors will be better time managers (no cramming!!) this time around. HAH. :)
